My ceilings are painted with a textured paint that contains asbestos. I now want smooth surfaces. What should I do?

Under no circumstances, sand or chip off, or otherwise disturb, the coating, as this will release asbestos fibres. Before going any further, read the advice, which is given a BCF Information Paper "Asbestos and Decorative Coatings" and in a National Society for Clean Air leaflet on asbestos www.nsca.org.uk
